Thrown Weapons

Axes, Knives and Spears

Man started out throwing rocks and sticks to kill for food and for defense. As his technology improved by knapping flint stones to make knives and crude axes, he became a more proficient hunter.

Eventually he lashed a knife to the end of a stick and produced the spear. Now he had an array of tools and weapons to gather food and protect his family. Since then thrown weapons has been a part of warfare.

The SCA has included thrown weapons in competitions from the beginning.

Getting Started

You don't need to be a member or even have your own equipment to start in SCA thrown weapons, but you must sign a waiver.  Our weapons experts will teach you for free and we have loaner gear to get you started, so you can see if thrown weapons is your "cup of tea" before laying out money on it.

A great way to begin is to familiarize yourself with the Outlands Thrown Weapons Handbook.

Throwing Practice

Thrown Weapons Practice takes place in tandem with Archery Practice .  The Shire of Drygestan holds Official Thrown Weapons / Archery Practice most Sundays, with unofficial pick up practices going on frequently. Thrown Weapons practices are free and open to the public. Our experienced weapons experts are always willing to share their knowledge of the sport. Check our interactive calendar for practice times and locations, or sign up for email alerts to stay current.

Competition

The Thrown Weapons Marshall in charge may have different types of targets and competitions.  One competition that is standard throughout the kingdoms is the Thrown Weapons Inter-Kingdom Challenge. Basically each weapon is thrown five times from three different distances at a standard target. The scores are then posted online so you can see your ranking throughout the known world.

The Outlands Kingdom also has a ranking system that uses the TWIC rules except for six throws from each distance. The ranks are: Novice Woodsman, Hunter, Warrior and Weapons Master.

Rankings for Knife, Axe, and Spear may also be achieved.

Axes, Knives, Spears

The SCA is a historical preservation society, so we only allow "period" weapons.

A knife may be single, double-edged, or just pointed as in a spike.

The axe may be single or double-edged and may have spikes. However, the spikes may not be counted in competition. If the axe has more than one edge, the scoring edge must be declared.

A spear should not be barbed but may be allowed by the Thrown Weapons Marshall.

All thrown weapons must be of a size that can be safely thrown with one hand and be legal in the Kingdom where it is being used (some states have legal restrictions on knives).
